Ranbir Kapoor Opens Up About Doubts Over Playing Lord Rama in 'Ramayana'

Actor Ranbir Kapoor has spoken about the responsibility of portraying Lord Rama in the upcoming film Ramayana, revealing that he initially experienced fear and self-doubt after being offered the role. Speaking during a special panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Ranbir said he questioned whether he was capable of doing justice to one of the most revered characters in Indian mythology.

Recalling his first reaction, Ranbir said he wondered if he was the right person to play Lord Rama on the big screen. He admitted that the opportunity brought immense pressure but said those feelings gradually transformed into gratitude. Describing the role as the opportunity of a lifetime, he said it also carried a profound moral responsibility because Lord Rama has inspired generations and represents values such as courage, compassion, forgiveness and righteousness.

The actor said he eventually realised that portraying Lord Rama was not about achieving perfection but about approaching the character with sincerity, faith and honesty. According to Ranbir, everyone associated with the film shared the same objective from the beginning—to present the story of the Ramayana as authentically as possible while remaining true to its essence.

During the panel discussion, actor Yash, who plays Ravana in the film, praised Ranbir's approach to the role. He said no one could claim to possess all the virtues of Lord Rama, adding that Ranbir's humility and respect for the character made him the right choice. Yash also commended his co-star's dedication and preparation, saying he had great respect for the effort put into bringing the iconic role to life.

The Comic-Con event was attended by Ranbir Kapoor, Yash, director Nitesh Tiwari and producer Namit Malhotra, who introduced the ambitious adaptation to an international audience. The panel offered fans insights into the film's vision and the team's commitment to recreating one of India's most celebrated epics on a grand cinematic scale.

Ramayana will be released in two parts, with the first instalment scheduled to arrive in theatres during Diwali 2026 and the second during Diwali 2027. Alongside Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama and Yash as Ravana, the film features Sai Pallavi as Sita, with Ravie Dubey, Sunny Deol, Rakul Preet Singh, Lara Dutta, Arun Govil, Vivek Oberoi and Kunal Kapoor also part of the ensemble cast.
