Ram Gopal Varma Responds to Pakistan's Propaganda Claims Against Dhurandhar 2 on X
RGV challenges Pakistan critics labelling Dhurandhar 2 a propaganda film boldly.
Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has responded strongly to criticism from across the border over the recently released film Dhurandhar 2, dismissing claims that the project is "propaganda". Taking to social media platform X, Varma addressed critics from Pakistan, suggesting that those who disagree with the film’s narrative should create their own version presenting their perspective.
In his post, Varma wrote that critics could find their own filmmaker like Aditya Dhar and produce a film reflecting what they believe to be the "truth". His remarks come amid an ongoing debate surrounding the film’s storyline, which has drawn mixed reactions since its release on March 19. While some audiences have praised its scale and storytelling, others have raised concerns about its depiction of sensitive geopolitical themes.
Speaking further in an interaction, Varma questioned the very definition of 'propaganda', arguing that every narrative is shaped by individual viewpoints. He explained that filmmakers, like any storytellers, present their understanding based on their own research and sources. According to him, differences in opinion are natural, and no single perspective can claim absolute authority over truth in such narratives.

Highlighting the role of creative freedom, Varma emphasized that a director’s job is to make a story appear believable rather than universally accepted. He added that if viewers or critics disagree with the portrayal in Dhar’s film, they should have the liberty to present an alternative version through their own creative efforts. His comments underline a broader debate about artistic interpretation and responsibility in cinema.
This is not the first time Varma has publicly expressed admiration for Aditya Dhar’s work. In an earlier statement, he described Dhar as a significant influence on his upcoming project, even calling him his “new guru". Varma noted that just as his earlier films were inspired by international cinema, his future work would draw inspiration from Dhar’s storytelling approach.
Dhurandhar 2 follows the story of Hamza Ali Mazari, played by Ranveer Singh, tracing his transformation and journey as a covert operative. The film also features a strong supporting cast, including Arjun Rampal, R. Madhavan, Sanjay Dutt, and others. As discussions around the film continue, the controversy highlights the intersection of cinema, politics, and public perception in contemporary storytelling.
