RGV credited Dawood Ibrahim for inspiring Satya and Company and claimed to be his soul mate.

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has stirred controversy with his latest remarks linking his career to underworld figure Dawood Ibrahim. Known for his bold and unconventional statements, Varma said that much of his success stems from real-life crime influences. His comments have once again sparked debate across social media and film circles. The filmmaker reflected on how the underworld shaped some of his most iconic works. His statements have drawn mixed reactions from audiences.

In a recent interview, Varma spoke about how films like Satya and Company were heavily inspired by real-life criminal networks. He stated that without figures like Dawood Ibrahim, these films might never have been made. According to him, these projects played a crucial role in defining his career. The gritty portrayal of Mumbai’s underworld became a hallmark of his filmmaking style. These films are still regarded as cult classics in Indian cinema.

Varma also revealed that he had dedicated his autobiography Guns & Thighs to Dawood Ibrahim, though the publisher later removed the reference. He defended the decision, saying his work was deeply influenced by such real-life characters. The filmmaker acknowledged that his livelihood is connected to stories rooted in crime and the underworld. His candid admission has surprised many. It has also reignited conversations about the ethics of glorifying crime in cinema.

Interestingly, Varma claimed that Dawood Ibrahim himself had watched and appreciated his films. He said he never received threatening calls, unlike many others in the industry. According to Varma, this was because those connected to the underworld admired his work. He even described himself as becoming their “soulmate” in a metaphorical sense. The remark has particularly drawn attention for its unusual phrasing. Critics and fans alike have reacted strongly.

While some view his comments as brutally honest, others have criticised them as insensitive. The debate highlights the complex relationship between cinema and real-life crime stories. Varma has often walked this fine line in his career. His latest remarks continue that pattern of controversy. Whether praised or criticised, he remains a filmmaker who rarely shies away from speaking his mind.
