Rajpal Yadav Released on Bail After Paying Rs 1.5 Crore in Cheque Bounce Case
Delhi High Court suspends sentence temporarily, directing the actor to comply with strict conditions.
Actor Rajpal Yadav was granted interim bail by the Delhi High Court on Monday in connection with a ₹9-crore cheque bounce case. The court suspended his sentence after noting that he had deposited ₹1.5 crore in the account of the complainant company, M/s Murali Projects Pvt Ltd. The relief is valid until the next date of hearing, subject to specific conditions imposed by the court.
The case stems from a ₹5-crore loan Yadav had taken in 2012 to finance his directorial venture Ata Pata Laapata. The film failed at the box office, leading to financial losses. Over time, the outstanding amount reportedly escalated to nearly ₹9 crore due to dishonoured cheques, accumulated interest and penalties, resulting in criminal proceedings under the Negotiable Instruments Act.
Earlier, the actor had issued multiple cheques to settle the dues, but these were returned unpaid, prompting legal action. Following repeated breaches of payment undertakings, the High Court directed him to surrender. On February 5, he surrendered at Tihar Jail and began serving a six-month sentence imposed in connection with the case.

During the recent hearing, Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma granted interim suspension of the sentence, observing the deposit made by the actor. The court directed Yadav to surrender his passport and barred him from leaving the country without prior permission. He has also been instructed to remain present, either physically or virtually, on the next hearing scheduled for March 18.
The proceedings arise from revision petitions filed by Yadav and his wife challenging a 2019 sessions court decision that upheld their conviction by a magisterial court in 2018. Amid the legal battle, members of the film industry, including Salman Khan and Ajay Devgn, extended financial and moral support. Yadav was last seen in Baby John and Interrogation and is slated to appear next in Bhoot Bangla, scheduled for release on April 10.
