Rajkummar Rao Steps into Ujjwal Nikam's Shoes in Courtroom Thriller 'Prahaar'; Teaser Out

Rajkummar Rao plays prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam in courtroom thriller Prahaar.

The makers of Prahaar unveiled the first teaser of the upcoming courtroom thriller on Thursday, offering a powerful glimpse of Rajkummar Rao in the role of renowned public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam. The film is based on the legal battle following the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks and focuses on the prosecution of Ajmal Kasab, the lone terrorist captured alive after the coordinated attacks. Scheduled for release on August 7, Prahaar promises an intense courtroom drama centred on justice and the rule of law.

The teaser opens with Rajkummar Rao, dressed in a lawyer's robes, as a voiceover introduces the legal proceedings against Kasab. Through the narration, Ujjwal Nikam raises questions that had long been debated by the public, including why Kasab was not immediately executed despite overwhelming evidence of his involvement in the attacks and why the government continued to bear the cost of keeping him in prison while the judicial process ran its course.

As the teaser progresses, the narrative shifts to the events surrounding the capture of Kasab. Nikam refers to Inspector Sanjay Govilkar, who was shot during the operation to apprehend the terrorist but did not kill him despite having the opportunity. In court, Nikam argues that Kasab was kept alive because he was vital evidence in exposing the conspiracy behind the attacks and ensuring that justice was delivered through India's legal system rather than through immediate retaliation.

The courtroom sequences build towards a dramatic climax as Nikam passionately defends the importance of due process even in cases involving terrorism. He argues that the strength of the Indian judicial system lies in punishing even the most heinous offenders according to the law. The teaser concludes with Nikam demanding capital punishment for Kasab, accusing him of waging war against India and seeking the highest penalty available under the law.

Apart from Rajkummar Rao's striking transformation into Ujjwal Nikam, the teaser also offers brief glimpses of the supporting cast, which includes Jaideep Ahlawat, Wamiqa Gabbi and Sikandar Kher. Their appearances suggest that the film will explore multiple perspectives surrounding one of India's most significant criminal trials while recreating key moments from the legal proceedings that followed the Mumbai terror attacks.

Directed by Avinash Arun, Prahaar features a story, screenplay and dialogues by Sumit Roy and is produced by Dinesh Vijan. The film is set for a theatrical release on August 7 and aims to revisit one of the most defining legal battles in India's history through the perspective of the prosecutor who led the case against Ajmal Kasab, highlighting themes of justice, accountability and the resilience of the country's judicial system.
