Non-Bailable Warrant Issued Against Ram Gopal Varma in Cheque Bounce Case

A sessions court in Mumbai has issued a non-bailable warrant (NBW) against filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma after rejecting his plea to suspend a three-month jail sentence.

A sessions court in Mumbai has issued a non-bailable warrant (NBW) against filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma after rejecting his plea to suspend a three-month jail sentence in a cheque bounce case. The ruling, delivered by Additional Sessions Judge A A Kulkarni on March 4, followed Varma’s absence in court. The matter is adjourned to July 28 for the warrant’s execution, though Varma can seek bail upon appearance.

The case stems from a January 21 conviction by Judicial Magistrate Y P Pujari in Andheri, who sentenced Varma under the Negotiable Instruments Act. He was ordered to pay Rs 3,72,219 to the complainant within three months. The dispute originated in 2018 when a company supplying hard disks filed a complaint against Varma’s firm. Between February and March 2018, the company provided goods worth Rs 2,38,220, backed by tax invoices. Varma issued a cheque on June 1, 2018, which bounced due to insufficient funds. A second cheque met the same fate after payment was stopped, prompting legal action.

Represented by advocates Rajesh Kumar Patel, the complainant argued Varma’s firm failed to settle the debt. Known for iconic films like Satya and Sarkar, Varma now faces legal heat in this financial tangle.
