Netflix Announces Hum Hindustani: Saif, Pratik Lead Tale of India's Historic First Election
Rahul Dholakia's Netflix film stars Saif Ali Khan and Pratik Gandhi in the story of India's first democratic election.
Actors Saif Ali Khan and Pratik Gandhi are set to collaborate for the first time in Netflix’s upcoming film Hum Hindustani, a historical drama inspired by true events surrounding India’s first-ever democratic election. Written and directed by Rahul Dholakia, the film aims to chronicle a defining chapter in the nation’s post-Independence journey.
Netflix unveiled the first look of the project on Tuesday, describing it as “the untold story of India’s very first election.” In its announcement, the streaming platform said the film explores the making of the world’s largest democracy, focusing on the monumental effort required to conduct a nationwide vote in a newly independent country.
Set in the years following Independence, Hum Hindustani follows a group of officials tasked with organising India’s inaugural election amid widespread chaos, resistance, and logistical challenges. The narrative highlights the immense odds faced on the ground as the country sought to uphold the promise of universal adult franchise, a radical idea at the time.

Sharing their thoughts on the project, the team behind the film said the story centres on one of the most defining commitments of modern India — the right to vote. They described the process of portraying the country’s first democratic exercise as both a responsibility and a privilege, calling it a story of belief, courage, and collective effort that helped shape the nation.
The film features an ensemble cast that includes Saif Ali Khan, Pratik Gandhi, Deepak Dobriyal, Mimi Chakraborty, Sarika, and Shraddha Dangar. While details about the characters have not yet been revealed, the cast suggests a strong focus on layered performances and grounded storytelling.
Hum Hindustani marks another collaboration between Netflix and filmmaker Rahul Dholakia, known for socially rooted narratives. The release date of the film has not yet been announced, but it is expected to premiere exclusively on Netflix for audiences in India and across the globe.
