John McClain, the veteran music executive and co-executor of Michael Jackson’s estate, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 71 in Malibu, California. He had not been keeping well in recent years, according to his representative. McClain was appointed alongside John Branca to manage the estate of the late pop icon following Jackson’s death in 2009. Together, they played a pivotal role in stabilizing the estate’s finances and expanding the singer’s legacy through strategic business decisions.

As co-executors, McClain and Branca successfully cleared the massive debts left behind by Michael Jackson and oversaw numerous high-profile projects that kept the artist’s influence alive. These included a Cirque du Soleil show dedicated to Jackson, the 2009 concert film This Is It, and the recent biographical film Michael released this year. McClain also produced several other related projects such as Michael Jackson’s Halloween in 2017, Michael Jackson: Slave to the Rhythm in 2014, and Bad 25 in 2012, showcasing his deep commitment to preserving the pop legend’s catalog and artistic vision.

McClain enjoyed a distinguished career spanning several decades in the music industry as a producer, A&R executive, and guitar player. He began his professional journey performing on studio recordings for prominent artists including Lionel Richie, Gladys Knight, and Diana Ross. In 1984, he took on the role of director of A&M Records’ Black music division, where he collaborated closely with Janet Jackson on her groundbreaking albums Control and Rhythm Nation, working alongside producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.

His contributions extended to urging the label to sign emerging talents like Marky Mark & The Funky Bunch and Gerardo during the early 1990s. McClain later collaborated and produced hits for a wide range of artists such as Michael Jackson, Ice Cube, Dr Dre, Kirk Franklin, and Teddy Riley. He was widely respected for his sharp business acumen and was recognized by the Los Angeles Times in 1998 as one of the most talented figures in Black music.

McClain’s passion for music was deeply rooted in his family background. Both his parents were involved in the industry, with his father owning a club and his mother working as a pianist. He started learning piano at the age of three and later took up the guitar as a teenager, inspired by artists like Jimi Hendrix. This early foundation shaped his multifaceted career, allowing him to transition seamlessly from performer to influential executive.

The news of McClain’s passing has drawn tributes from across the music world, highlighting his significant impact on R&B, pop, and the management of one of the greatest entertainment legacies. His efforts helped transform Michael Jackson’s estate into a thriving enterprise while supporting numerous artists throughout his professional life. As the industry mourns his loss, McClain leaves behind a lasting legacy of dedication, creativity, and business excellence in music.
