Marathi Cinema Celebrates: Raja Shivaji Draws Crowds With 68% Theatre Occupancy on Opening Day
Raja Shivaji earns Rs 11.35 crore on opening day with 68% Marathi occupancy, outperforming recent Bollywood releases.
Riteish Deshmukh’s historical action drama Raja Shivaji opened in theatres on Maharashtra Day with a solid first-day collection of Rs 11.35 crore across India. Released in both Hindi and Marathi, the film posted a respectable start at the box office, driven largely by strong support in Maharashtra and interest in the Marathi-language version. The opening positions the film as one of the notable regional-Hindi crossover launches of the year.
According to early trade estimates, the film screened in around 6,000 shows nationwide on release day. Of these, nearly 1,900 shows were in Marathi and approximately 4,200 in Hindi. The Marathi version performed significantly better in occupancy terms, recording around 68 per cent overall attendance, while the Hindi version registered roughly 16 per cent occupancy.
Mumbai emerged as the strongest market for the film’s Marathi release, where around 600 shows reportedly recorded occupancy close to 73 per cent. In contrast, the Hindi version saw moderate traction in northern circuits, with Delhi-NCR hosting around 400 shows at approximately 13 per cent occupancy. These numbers suggest the film’s core appeal remains strongest in Maharashtra and Marathi-speaking audiences.

The Day 1 figure places Raja Shivaji behind some larger historical blockbusters but still marks a healthy opening for a film led by Riteish Deshmukh in the period genre. Reports noted that the film earned roughly one-third of the opening benchmark set by Chhaava, making comparisons inevitable. However, analysts will now watch whether positive word of mouth can help sustain collections over the weekend.
Produced by Jio Studios and Mumbai Film Company, the film features a large ensemble cast including Sanjay Dutt, Abhishek Bachchan, Vidya Balan, Mahesh Manjrekar, Sachin Khedekar, Bhagyashree, Fardeen Khan, Boman Irani and Genelia Deshmukh. A cameo appearance by Salman Khan has also generated attention online and added to pre-release buzz.
The coming days will be crucial in determining the film’s long-term commercial success. Strong regional support, holiday momentum and audience reception could help push collections higher through the weekend. If the Marathi version continues its current trend while the Hindi market improves, Raja Shivaji may build into a successful theatrical run.
