The man behind a recent death threat to Bollywood actor Salman Khan has been identified as a 26-year-old from Gujarat's Vadodara district — and police say he is mentally unwell.

On Sunday, the Mumbai Traffic Police received a disturbing WhatsApp message threatening to bomb Khan’s car and assault him at his Bandra residence. The actor, who enjoys Y-Plus security due to past threats, saw a swift police response as security around his home was tightened.

Following a probe, Mumbai police tracked the origin of the message to a village in Waghodia taluka, Vadodara. A team, accompanied by local Waghodia police, visited the suspect’s residence on Monday.

"It turned out that the man is mentally unstable and currently undergoing treatment," Vadodara Superintendent of Police Rohan Anand told reporters. The Mumbai police issued a notice for the man to appear before them and left without making an arrest.

A formal case had earlier been registered under Section 351(2)(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for criminal intimidation.

This isn’t the first time Salman Khan has been the target of serious threats. In April 2024, two men on motorcycles opened fire outside his residence in Galaxy Apartments, Bandra. That incident was linked to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, which had previously warned the actor to apologise to the Bishnoi community over the alleged blackbuck poaching case.

Weeks later, Navi Mumbai police uncovered a plan by the same gang to assassinate Khan during one of his visits to his farmhouse in Panvel.

Despite the latest threat stemming from an individual with mental health issues, the actor's security remains a top priority for Mumbai police, given his history with high-profile threats.
