Priyanka Chopra Recalls Mother Grabbing Delhi Cab Driver's Throat to Protect Her at Age 11
Priyanka Chopra shared how her mother confronted a Delhi cab driver taking an unknown shortcut at night.
Global Star Priyanka Chopra recently recounted a chilling childhood incident involving her mother, Madhu Chopra, while promoting her Amazon Prime film Bluff. The actress, who plays a fiercely protective mother in the movie, shared the personal anecdote in an interview with ANI, explaining how it helped her connect with her on-screen character. Chopra described the episode as a defining moment that showed her mother’s fierce side in a real-life situation.
Priyanka recalled that she was around 11 years old when the incident occurred during a nighttime cab ride in Delhi. “We were driving, and suddenly—I don’t know—all I saw was my mother holding the driver’s throat,” she said. The cab driver had taken a turn her mother did not recognise, claiming it was a shortcut. The encounter, which took place around 11 PM with just Priyanka and her mother in the car, quickly escalated as Madhu Chopra demanded the driver return to the main road.
The actor described how her mother physically intervened to ensure their safety. “She slapped him. She said, ‘Drive back to the main road.’ She was like, ‘I’m here with my teenage daughter,’” Priyanka said. The experience left a lasting impression on her, with Chopra adding that she did not debate her mother on anything for the next four months. She noted that her mother appeared shaken once they safely returned to the hotel, highlighting the intensity of the moment.

Priyanka said the real-life event helped her prepare for her role in Bluff, which follows a former female pirate in the 19th-century Caribbean whose past dramatically resurfaces, threatening her present life. The actress explained that her personal understanding of maternal protectiveness allowed her to authentically portray a mother willing to go to extreme lengths to protect her family against overwhelming odds.
The film also stars Karl Urban, who plays a feared pirate determined to track down Chopra’s character. Produced by AGBO Studios and backed by Amazon MGM Studios, Bluff marks another collaboration between Priyanka and the studio following her work on Citadel. The movie promises a mix of high-stakes adventure and emotional depth, highlighting themes of courage, survival, and maternal strength.
Bluff is set to premiere on Prime Video on February 25, offering viewers a chance to witness Priyanka Chopra’s powerful performance as a mother and fighter. The actress’ reflections on her own life experiences provide added context for her role, showcasing how personal history can enrich an actor’s portrayal on screen. Fans and audiences are expected to be drawn to both the action and the heartfelt maternal story at the film’s core.
