'Maa Behen' Director Suresh Triveni Responds to Viral ‘Choli Ke Peeche’ Reference
Director dismisses viral interpretation as overly clever analysis.
Director Suresh Triveni has dismissed speculation that a key narrative element in his recently released Netflix film Maa Behen was inspired by the iconic and controversial song Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai from the 1993 film Khal Nayak. In an interview, Triveni said the creative team never intended any connection between the film’s “sleeveless blouse” motif and the famous song, which featured Madhuri Dixit and sparked significant debate upon its release more than three decades ago.
The director said the parallels being drawn by viewers were not part of the original conception of the film. According to Triveni, the sleeveless blouse serves as an important character and narrative device within the satirical comedy. He explained that while filmmakers often hope audiences will discuss aspects of their work, it is impossible to predict which elements will resonate most strongly. He added that the interpretation linking the blouse to “Choli Ke Peeche” had not occurred to the creative team during the writing or production process.
The director said the central idea behind the symbol was related to personal choice and social perceptions rather than any deliberate reference to a past film or song. Reflecting on his own upbringing in Ranchi, Triveni recalled that sleeveless blouses were once viewed as a bold fashion statement in many communities, making them a useful cultural symbol for the story.

Triveni also credited writer Pooja Thulani for integrating the concept effectively into the narrative. He noted that he was surprised and encouraged by the level of attention audiences were paying to such details, describing it as a positive sign of viewer engagement with the film. Released last week, Maa Behen has drawn praise for its satirical tone, sharp writing and performances.
The film stars Madhuri Dixit alongside Triptii Dimri and Dharna Durga. In the story, a sleeveless blouse becomes a crucial clue in a plot involving the cover-up of a neighbour’s apparent death, helping drive the film’s comedy and mystery elements. The discussion around the blouse’s symbolism has added another layer of public interest to the film following its release.
