Karan Johar Criticizes Bollywood's Dependence on Paid PR
Karan Johar criticises Bollywood's overpaid PR culture extensively.
Filmmaker and producer Karan Johar has sparked a fresh debate in the entertainment industry after openly criticising Bollywood’s growing reliance on paid public relations. In a recent conversation, he expressed concern over what he described as an “overdrive mode” of PR activity in the industry, suggesting that excessive self-promotion is overshadowing genuine artistic achievement.
Johar stated that Bollywood professionals should allow their work to speak for itself rather than depending heavily on paid publicity campaigns. He remarked that in today’s environment, even claims about success, talent, or personal image often come through paid promotion, which he believes has changed the way audiences perceive authenticity in the industry. According to him, this constant push for visibility risks diluting real appreciation for talent and performance.
The filmmaker clarified that his comments were not directed at any specific actor or group but were instead a broader observation about current industry practices. His remarks came in response to a question referencing younger actors and their promotional strategies, but he emphasized that the issue extends across the industry as a whole. Johar also underlined that marketing and publicity are legitimate professional fields but should be used responsibly and not in a way that blurs the line between genuine success and manufactured perception.

He further highlighted how paid PR has made it increasingly difficult to distinguish between authentic audience reactions and promotional narratives. Johar pointed out that social media amplification and paid visibility campaigns often create confusion about what content is truly resonating with viewers, raising questions about credibility and engagement metrics in the entertainment space.
On the work front, Johar’s production house, Dharma Productions, continues to back multiple projects, including upcoming films such as “Chand Mera Dil” and "Naagzilla", along with recent releases like "Yodha", "Kill", and "Homebound". He also mentioned that the next season of his popular talk show is expected to return around the Diwali festive season, continuing his long-standing presence in both film production and entertainment media.
