Kangana Ranaut’s ‘Emergency’ to Stream on Netflix from March 17
Kangana announced the OTT release date with an Instagram post showing a still from the film alongside an image of Indira Gandhi
Actor-politician Kangana Ranaut has announced that her film Emergency will be available for streaming on Netflix from March 17. The film, which released in theatres on January 17 after multiple delays, faced controversy over its censor certificate and allegations of misrepresenting the Sikh community.
Ranaut shared the Netflix release date on Instagram, posting a still from the film alongside an old image of Indira Gandhi, captioned: “17th March releasing on @Netflix.”
Directed and produced by Ranaut, Emergency chronicles the 21 months of Emergency imposed by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1975, with Ranaut portraying Gandhi. Backed by Zee Entertainment, the film struggled to obtain clearance from the Censor Board, which recommended 13 cuts before granting approval.
Despite mixed reviews and allegations of bias, Emergency ran in theatres for four weeks, collecting ₹18.35 crore nett, as per trade website Sacnilk. It was not screened in Punjab following protests by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and Sikh organizations. Several politicians also called for a ban on the film, which Ranaut described as “complete harassment of art and the artist.”
The BJP MP from Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, previously revealed that she had invested all her wealth into the film, which faced significant backlash for alleged anti-Sikh content.
Alongside Ranaut, Emergency features Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Vishak Nair, Milind Soman, and the late Satish Kaushik. The film is produced by Zee Studios and Manikarnika Films.
