Imtiaz Ali Clarifies Diljit Dosanjh’s Absence From 'Main Vaapas Aaunga' Promotion Campaign Row

Imtiaz Ali says Diljit Dosanjh absence not important promotions

The latest film Main Vaapas Aaunga, directed by filmmaker Imtiaz Ali, has been released globally in theatres, but its promotional campaign has drawn attention due to the absence of one of its lead actors, Diljit Dosanjh, from media interactions and promotional events. The film stars Sharvari, Vedang Raina, and Diljit Dosanjh in lead roles. While the film has been actively promoted by the director and Vedang Raina across interviews and media appearances, Diljit’s limited presence has sparked discussion within industry circles, especially given his prominence as both a musician and actor.

Addressing the issue in an interview with India Today, Imtiaz Ali clarified that Diljit Dosanjh’s absence from promotional activities was not due to any internal decision to sideline publicity efforts but rather due to scheduling conflicts. He explained that Diljit was engaged in international concert performances at the time of the film’s release window, which made it difficult for him to participate in promotions. Imtiaz Ali also noted that Sharvari was similarly unavailable for parts of the promotional campaign due to ongoing shooting commitments abroad.

According to him, these overlapping professional schedules were known during the planning phase of the film, and the production team had accounted for such constraints while finalizing release timelines and casting decisions. The filmmaker further elaborated that the priority during production was securing the right cast for the film rather than focusing on whether all actors would be consistently available for promotional duties. He suggested that in contemporary filmmaking, especially with actors balancing multiple projects across film and live performances, promotional availability is increasingly influenced by logistical realities rather than deliberate strategy.

Imtiaz Ali also touched upon evolving promotional trends in the entertainment industry, where actors sometimes rely on digital platforms and social media engagement rather than traditional press interactions. While he did not position any approach as superior, he acknowledged that promotional strategies vary widely across projects and are often shaped by convenience, timing, and the nature of the actors’ professional commitments.

He added that the primary objective of Main Vaapas Aaunga remains audience reach and cinematic impact, regardless of the extent of individual participation in promotional activities. The film’s release strategy, he indicated, was designed to ensure visibility and accessibility across markets, with or without a full-scale promotional presence from all principal cast members.
