Imran Khan's 10-Year Comeback Surprise in Vir Das' Happy Patel Spy Film

Imran Khan returns after 10 years with cameo in Aamir Khan-backed Happy Patel film.

Aamir Khan Productions has taken fans by surprise with the announcement of Happy Patel: Khatarnakh Jasoos, a film that not only marks Vir Das’ directorial debut but also brings back Imran Khan after a decade-long hiatus. The announcement video, featuring a humorous exchange between Aamir Khan and Vir Das, ends with a glimpse of Imran, instantly sending social media into a frenzy. His last film appearance was Katti Batti in 2015, followed by a brief shift to directing in 2018. The film is slated for release on January 16, 2026.

The quirky announcement showcases Aamir Khan questioning Vir Das about the film’s missing elements—action, romance, and dance numbers. Despite Vir’s defence, Aamir remains unimpressed until audiences are shown exiting theatres, enthusiastically praising everything he doubted. The video concludes by introducing Vir Das, Mona Singh, and Imran Khan in their respective roles. This creative reveal has sparked immense excitement around the project.

Imran Khan’s cameo holds special significance as fans have been eagerly awaiting his return. Known for cult-favourite rom-coms like Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na, I Hate Luv Storys, and Break Ke Baad, Imran had stepped away from acting after the failure of Katti Batti. Reports earlier this year indicated that he was already preparing for a full-fledged comeback through a Netflix rom-com starring Bhumi Pednekar. That project is being directed by Danish Aslam, reuniting the actor–director duo after 15 years.

Imran has spoken candidly about the personal journey that kept him away from cinema. In interviews, he noted that his hiatus was spent navigating major life changes, including a divorce and deep personal reflection. He shared that returning to films felt like a “natural progression” shaped by maturity and life experiences rather than professional ambition. His upcoming project with Danish Aslam reportedly mirrors this evolution, exploring themes of relationships and growth.

Film journalist Rahul Raut recently confirmed Imran’s comeback project by sharing a picture of the film’s clapboard on social media. The upcoming Netflix film, described as a “dysfunctional romantic dramedy,” also stars Bhumi Pednekar and Gurfateh Pirzada. This return is being celebrated widely by fans who have missed Imran’s signature screen presence. The actor expressed excitement at collaborating again with a familiar creative team after many transformative years.

Meanwhile, Vir Das, who plays the titular detective in Happy Patel, continues to expand his creative footprint beyond acting. Known for films like Delhi Belly, Go Goa Gone, and Badmaash Company, he reunites with Aamir Khan Productions after more than a decade. His directorial venture is being hailed as an unconventional, high-energy entertainer, made even more special by Imran Khan’s cameo. With a strong cast, innovative concept, and surprising nostalgia factor, the film has already become one of the most anticipated releases of 2026.
