'Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai' Earns ₹24 Crore Over First Three Days

Varun Dhawan starrer earns ₹24 crore in first weekend, underperforms expectations.

Varun Dhawan and David Dhawan’s latest comedy film “Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai” has recorded a disappointing performance at the box office during its opening weekend, collecting ₹24 crore in three days despite initial promotional buzz. The film, which also stars Pooja Hegde and Mrunal Thakur, released on Friday but has struggled to maintain momentum due to mixed-to-negative audience and critic responses.

The film opened with ₹7.50 crore nett on its first day in India, according to box office tracking reports. However, it failed to show significant growth on Saturday, repeating the same figure. On Sunday, the film saw a modest rise and earned ₹9 crore, bringing the total domestic weekend collection to ₹24 crore. The overall trend indicates limited word-of-mouth support, which has impacted its box office trajectory.

The worldwide gross collection for the film stands at approximately ₹37.30 crore, reflecting a similar underwhelming performance in overseas markets. Despite the presence of a popular cast and strong pre-release promotions, the film has not managed to translate its buzz into sustained ticket sales across territories.

Industry estimates suggest that “Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai” has been made on a budget of around ₹50–55 crore. This puts added pressure on the film to perform strongly during weekdays, particularly on Monday, to recover costs and move towards break-even status. Trade analysts note that steady weekday collections will be crucial in determining whether the film can recover from its weak opening weekend.

Critical response has also played a role in shaping audience reception. Reviewers have pointed out that while the film carries the signature comedic style associated with director David Dhawan, the execution lacks freshness, with predictable storytelling and inconsistent humor. Although a few sequences in the second half have been appreciated for delivering genuine laughs, overall reception has remained lukewarm.

As the film enters its crucial weekday phase, industry watchers will be closely tracking its performance to assess whether it can stabilize or continue its downward trend. The coming days are expected to be decisive in determining its final box office verdict.
