Gul Panag Questions Haryana DGP’s Comments on Thar and Bullet Owners

Actress defends iconic vehicles against Haryana police chief's stereotype.

Haryana DGP OP Singh sparked outrage on November 9 by declaring Mahindra Thar and Royal Enfield Bullet owners as "rogue elements," claiming the vehicles reflect a reckless mindset. Speaking at a media briefing on vehicle checks, he cited incidents of stunts, rash driving, and fatal accidents involving Thars, including a case where a police officer’s son allegedly ran over someone. Singh insisted such vehicles demand extra scrutiny during inspections.

The remarks, delivered in Hindi with a seemingly casual tone, quickly went viral, igniting backlash on social media. Critics accused the DGP of profiling based on vehicle choice rather than behavior. Reports of Thar misuse—including passengers standing on sideboards, performing stunts, and even urinating from moving vehicles—have fueled concerns, but many argued stereotyping all owners is unfair and counterproductive.

Actress and avid motorist Gul Panag hit back on social media, proudly stating, "I drive a Thar. I ride a Royal Enfield." She revealed multiple women in her family, across generations, own and operate both vehicles. Panag dismissed the DGP’s comments as "anecdotal generalisations" that do nothing to improve road safety.

She emphasized that effective law enforcement should focus on accountability, not branding. "What truly makes laws effective is a mechanism that inspires respect and fear of consequences," she wrote, defending the Thar and Bullet as iconic Indian brands celebrated for capability and heritage. Panag insisted judging people by their vehicles undermines fair policing.

The controversy has reignited debates on road safety versus personal freedom, with enthusiasts rallying behind responsible ownership. While authorities push stricter checks, voices like Panag’s call for evidence-based enforcement over sweeping stereotypes.
