From Screen to Spice: Mouni Roy’s Fusion Eatery Is Changing Indian Dining
Actress turns restaurateur, blends avocado with jhalmuri in personal culinary venture.
Actor Mouni Roy has successfully transitioned from screen to kitchen, establishing Badmaash, a modern Indian restaurant chain that blends tradition with innovation. Launched three years ago in Bengaluru’s Sarjapur, the brand has expanded to Mumbai’s Andheri and recently opened a new outlet in Electronic City, Bengaluru. Partnering with VRO Hospitality Pvt. Ltd.—co-owned by her husband and his friends—Roy has built a growing culinary empire rooted in her deep love for Indian flavors.
The idea for Badmaash stemmed from Roy’s lifelong dream of owning a food space. “I always imagined having a little cafeteria,” she shared at the Indian Restaurant Congress 2024. While traveling for shoots, she craved authentic Indian food after just a few days abroad. When the opportunity arose through VRO Hospitality, she embraced it wholeheartedly. “The joy you feel when others enjoy the food you serve—it’s wholesome and fulfilling,” she said.
Badmaash stands out for its experimental menu that reimagines Indian classics. Roy personally curates dishes like Avocado Bhel (₹395), a fusion of her love for avocado and Kolkata’s jhalmuri. Other signatures include Mounilicious (₹695)—a lightly sweet drink tailored to her taste—and staples like Kanda Bhajiya (₹355), Sev Puri (₹295), and prawn dishes (₹795). Desserts such as Shahi Tukda and Gulab Jamun are priced at ₹410 each. Roy is deeply involved in menu planning and interior design, ensuring every detail reflects her vision.

Roy believes Indian cuisine has immense untapped potential and saw a gap in quality, creative Indian dining in cities like Bengaluru and Mumbai. “You can do so much with it,” she said, emphasizing innovation without losing authenticity. From naming drinks after herself to designing welcoming spaces, Badmaash is unmistakably personal—a celebration of flavor, culture, and her journey from actor to entrepreneur.
With multiple outlets thriving and more in the pipeline, Mouni Roy has proven that passion, when paired with creativity and business acumen, can cook up success—one bold dish at a time.
