FIR Against Ranveer Singh in Bengaluru Over Daiva Mimicry at IFFI
Ranveer Singh faces FIR in Bengaluru for mimicking Kantara Daiva scene.
Bollywood Actor Ranveer Singh has been booked under Sections 196, 299, and 302 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for allegedly insulting Hindu religious sentiments by mimicking the sacred Chavundi Daiva scene from Rishab Shetty’s Kantara during the closing ceremony of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa on November 28, 2025. The FIR was lodged at High Grounds Police Station by Bengaluru-based advocate Prashanth Methal.
The complaint claims that Ranveer, during a stage act, mocked expressions associated with Panjurli and Guliga Daiva and referred to the revered Chavundi Daiva as a “female ghost,” which the complainant alleged was both derogatory and disrespectful to the coastal Karnataka tradition. Methal came across a video of the performance on Instagram on December 2, 2025, from an account named Brief Chaat.
Chavundi Daiva is a revered guardian deity representing divine feminine energy in coastal Karnataka, and followers consider the portrayal of the deity as a ghost to be a serious misrepresentation that offends religious sentiments. The FIR states that the act was deliberate and malicious, intended to outrage religious feelings and promote hatred.

The case has been referred to the 1st Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court in Bengaluru and is scheduled for hearing on April 8, 2026. Legal experts note that such cases under BNS often involve extensive hearings to determine intent and the potential impact on public sentiment.
Interestingly, this is not the first complaint against mimicking the Daiva scenes. In early December 2025, Methal had filed a similar complaint at the same police station regarding imitations of a scene from Kantara Chapter 1, highlighting growing sensitivity around cinematic depictions of religious traditions.
The FIR against Ranveer has sparked discussion on social media, with debates focusing on freedom of artistic expression versus respect for religious beliefs, making this case one of the more closely watched legal matters involving a Bollywood celebrity in recent times.
