Farida Jalal Says Her Potential Remains Untapped, Wants Challenging Negative Roles Now
Farida Jalal seeks challenging negative roles in films
Veteran actor Farida Jalal says she still has much more to offer as a performer and is eager to take on challenging negative roles, believing that her full acting potential remains untapped despite a career spanning several decades in Indian cinema. The 77-year-old actor, known for portraying warm and memorable maternal characters across films and television, said she is keen to break away from her established on-screen image. Speaking about the kind of work she hopes to receive, Jalal said she would welcome opportunities to play antagonistic or unconventional characters that allow her to showcase a different side of her acting abilities.
"My potential is still untapped," she said, expressing her desire for filmmakers to cast her in more demanding roles. Jalal is currently receiving praise for her performance in Welcome to the Jungle, in which she plays Badi Bi, a character who speaks incoherently. Despite the unusual nature of the role, the performance has resonated with audiences, earning appreciation from viewers and colleagues alike. Reflecting on the response, she said the positive feedback from all quarters has been rewarding. "God's kind! Everyone has been saying great things.
Compliments are flowing in from all quarters. This is our reward as actors," she said. Recalling how the character came to life, Jalal revealed that the idea emerged during a discussion with actor Akshay Kumar and director Ahmad Khan. According to her, Kumar received a phone call during the meeting from someone who spoke rapidly and incoherently, inspiring the team to incorporate a similar speech pattern into her character. Jalal said Kumar suggested giving audiences something completely different from the clear dialogue delivery and impeccable diction for which she has long been recognised.

"Akshay, Ahmad and I were all sitting together when Akshay got a call. This girl on the other end kept jabbering away. After the call, Akshay said, 'Let's have you do something similar in the film. Everyone knows you for your perfect dialogue delivery, pronunciation, diction, etc. Let's give you this character now.' And I thought, 'Okay, let's give it a shot.' And now everyone has only great things to say!" she recalled.
With a career spanning more than five decades, Farida Jalal has established herself as one of Hindi cinema's most respected character actors. She has appeared in hundreds of films, portraying mothers, grandmothers, sisters and supportive family members, while also delivering memorable performances in comic, dramatic and emotional roles. Her longevity and consistent presence across generations of cinema have made her one of Bollywood's most recognisable faces.
Despite her extensive body of work, Jalal believes audiences and filmmakers have yet to see the full range of her capabilities. She said she remains enthusiastic about experimenting with complex characters and hopes directors will entrust her with roles that challenge conventional perceptions of her screen persona. Her willingness to embrace unfamiliar parts, coupled with the acclaim for her latest performance, reflects her continued passion for acting and her desire to keep evolving even after decades in the industry.
