Dhurandhar 2 Loses 6 Minutes in India as CBFC Cuts Beheading and Violence Scenes

The CBFC removes beheading and extreme violence scenes, trimming Dhurandhar 2 by six minutes.

The Central Board of Film Certification has ordered multiple cuts to the upcoming Bollywood film Dhurandhar 2, reducing its runtime by more than six minutes for the Indian theatrical release. The changes include the removal or shortening of several scenes depicting extreme violence, including a controversial beheading sequence. The action thriller, directed by Aditya Dhar and starring Ranveer Singh, is scheduled to release in theatres nationwide on March 19 following paid previews.

According to the certification report issued by the board, the filmmakers were instructed to implement a series of edits before the film could receive approval for release. The CBFC recommended four major modifications among a broader list of adjustments, all involving scenes that portrayed intense physical violence. The edits include reductions in sequences described as smashing an eye, a beheading followed by kicking the severed head, striking a character with a cement block, and another moment involving a hammer attack.

The report also indicates that certain textual changes were required in the film. In particular, a reference to “Lahore” in the informational text was replaced with “Delhi,” while the dates related to India’s demonetisation policy were corrected in the subtitles. Additionally, the filmmakers reportedly submitted a formal permission letter to the certification board seeking approval for the use of references to the Indian Prime Minister and archival news footage within the film.

Following the required edits, the film has received an ‘A’ certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification, indicating that it is restricted to adult audiences. The final runtime of the Indian version now stands at approximately three hours, forty-nine minutes, and thirty-six seconds. The version initially submitted to the board was around three hours and fifty-one minutes long, while the international cut reportedly runs for nearly three hours and fifty-five minutes.

The censorship decisions have sparked debate online, with some viewers questioning the need for extensive cuts in a film already designated for adult audiences. Several social media users argued that an age-restricted certification should allow the original scenes to remain intact, while others criticized the board’s role in modifying action sequences. The discussion reflects an ongoing debate in India about the balance between artistic freedom and regulatory oversight in cinema.

Dhurandhar 2 features a star-studded cast including Arjun Rampal, R. Madhavan, and Sanjay Dutt alongside Ranveer Singh. The film’s trailer, released earlier this month, showcases Singh in dual roles and promises high-intensity action sequences and a revenge-driven storyline. Produced by Jio Studios and B62 Studios, the sequel arrives after the success of the original Dhurandhar, which became one of the highest-grossing films of 2025.
