Dhurandhar 2: Deepak Tijori Questions Why Censor Board Half-Mutes Abuses in Theatres

Deepak Tijori questions CBFC's inconsistent audio censorship policy for theatrical versus OTT releases.

Actor-director Deepak Tijori has raised concerns over the film certification process in India, questioning the logic behind “half-muted” abusive words in theatrical releases. His remarks come amid the ongoing buzz surrounding Dhurandhar 2, which recently received certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

In a detailed Instagram post, Tijori expressed confusion over why certain expletives are only partially muted in films cleared for adult audiences. He argued that if a film is already rated ‘A’, indicating it is meant strictly for adults, selectively muting portions of abusive words does little to serve any meaningful purpose. He questioned whether such practices genuinely protect viewers or simply create inconsistency in content regulation.

Tijori further pointed out what he described as a contradiction in the system, noting that films released in theatres with muted dialogues often arrive on OTT platforms shortly after with no such restrictions. He suggested that this creates a situation where explicit content becomes more accessible in home environments, potentially exposing younger audiences to unfiltered material despite theatrical censorship.

The CBFC certification report for the film highlights several modifications mandated by the board, particularly involving scenes of extreme violence. These include toned-down depictions of graphic acts such as beheading, head injuries, and other intense sequences. Additionally, minor textual corrections were made, including changes in subtitles and references within the film’s informational content.

According to official details, the film has been granted an ‘A’ certificate with a final runtime of 3 hours, 49 minutes, and 36 seconds in India. The domestic version is slightly shorter than the original cut submitted for certification and is also trimmed compared to its international version. These edits reflect the board’s broader approach to moderating explicit content before theatrical release.

Dhurandhar, the first installment released in December 2025, emerged as a major box office success. The sequel sees the return of prominent actors including Ranveer Singh, Arjun Rampal, R. Madhavan, and Sanjay Dutt, continuing the franchise’s high-profile appeal while also sparking debate over censorship practices in Indian cinema.
