Bobby Deol Admits to Being Stereotyped as Villain After Animal Success
Bobby Deol opens up about being typecast as a villain actor.
Actor Bobby Deol has acknowledged that the success of his recent negative roles has led to him being increasingly typecast as a villain. The actor, who enjoyed considerable popularity as a leading man and romantic hero during the 1990s and 2000s, has experienced a notable second phase in his career through intense and often antagonistic characters. Speaking at the Jagran Film Festival in Delhi, Bobby said he understands why actors tend to receive similar roles after succeeding in a particular genre but is making an effort to explore different characters.
Bobby's career resurgence gained significant attention with the web series Aashram, in which he portrayed a conman and criminal who presents himself as a self-proclaimed godman. The success of the series was followed by his role as the antagonist in the 2023 blockbuster Animal, which further strengthened his image as an actor capable of playing dark and intimidating characters. Since then, he has appeared in several projects featuring powerful negative roles, including Hari Har Veera Mallu, Kanguva, Daaku Maharaj, Alpha and Jana Nayagan.
The actor admitted that being repeatedly offered similar characters can result in an actor becoming associated with one particular image. Bobby explained that this is a natural consequence of succeeding in a specific type of role, as filmmakers often prefer to approach actors for characters they believe they can portray successfully. However, he said he does not want to remain restricted to villainous parts and is actively looking for opportunities that allow him to demonstrate a wider range as a performer.

Bobby said he is particularly interested in projects that offer different shades and personalities, even when he continues to portray antagonists. He pointed to Bandar as an example of his attempt to move beyond the image created by his recent roles. In the film, directed by Anurag Kashyap, Bobby plays an ageing actor who faces an allegation of rape from his former girlfriend. The film was released in theatres in June and received positive critical attention, giving the actor another opportunity to take on a complex character.
The 57-year-old actor also indicated that his efforts to diversify his work will continue through upcoming streaming projects. Bobby is set to appear in the Prime Video spy series Teen Kauwe, which is currently in production. The series also features Sidhant Gupta, Fatima Sana Shaikh and Pavail Gulati. With both films and web projects in his upcoming slate, Bobby appears keen to balance the popularity he has gained through antagonistic roles with characters that allow him to explore different emotional and dramatic dimensions.
Bobby's comments reflect the changing trajectory of his career, from a leading man associated with romance and family dramas to an actor who has found renewed recognition through darker and more challenging performances. While the success of Aashram and Animal opened a new chapter for him, the actor now wants to ensure that this phase does not define his entire career. By taking on varied roles and experimenting with different formats, Bobby hopes to establish himself as a versatile performer rather than being limited to the villain tag.
