Arijit Singh Announces Retirement from Playback: "Several Reasons, Got Bored"
Arijit Singh retires from playback singing, citing boredom and a long-time desire to step away after 15 peak years.
Bollywood Singer Arijit Singh shocked fans and the film industry when he announced his retirement from playback singing in a social media post on Tuesday night, citing multiple personal reasons for stepping away from active film vocals.
In his Instagram post, the double National Award-winning artist wished fans a happy new year while breaking the news of his decision. The announcement came just days after his latest track, Maatrubhumi, a duet with Shreya Ghoshal for the Salman Khan-starrer Battle of Galwan, was released ahead of Republic Day.
Explaining his decision, Arijit Singh wrote, “There is not one reason behind this; there are several reasons, plus I have been trying to do this for a long time. Finally, I have gathered the right courage. One of the reasons is simple—I get bored pretty quickly; that’s why I keep changing arrangements of the same songs and perform them on stage. So here is the thing: I got bored.” Screenshots from what is claimed to be a post on his private X account have also circulated widely online.

Arijit Singh’s journey in Bollywood began with a humble debut in the Telugu film Kedi in 2010, followed by his Hindi playback debut in Murder 2 with the song Phir Mohabbat Karne Chala Hai Dil, sung alongside Mohammed Irfan. However, his true breakthrough came with Aashiqui 2 in 2013, catapulting him to national fame.
Over a 15-year career, Arijit Singh has lent his voice to more than 800 songs, averaging over 53 tracks per year, including compositions for films like Pagglait starring Sanya Malhotra. Alongside recording, he has performed extensively on live shows and tours both in India and abroad, making his presence a constant in the lives of music lovers.
Despite his immense success, Arijit has maintained a low-profile lifestyle, living mostly in his hometown, Murshidabad, West Bengal, away from the glitz and glamour of Mumbai. Media interactions have been rare, and his recordings are largely done in his own studio. Friends and colleagues note that after 15 years of relentless work, the exhaustion of constant creative output may have contributed to his decision to step back.
Those close to him say that Arijit Singh has experienced the peak of fame, wealth, and recognition, yet his choice reflects a desire to prioritize personal satisfaction and mental peace over continuous professional demands. Fans worldwide are mourning the end of an era, celebrating a singer whose distinct voice has become synonymous with modern Bollywood romance and soul-stirring melodies.
