AR Rahman Breaks Silence on Communal Remark Controversy

Music Maestro AR Rahman has clarified his recent comments on alleged “communal” bias in the Hindi film industry, following a wave of criticism online. In a heartfelt video shared on Instagram, Rahman stressed that his intention was never to hurt anyone and that music has always been his primary medium for connection and cultural celebration.

Rahman highlighted that India has been central to his life and creative journey, providing him space for artistic freedom and inspiration. He reflected on his diverse projects, including collaborations with Naga musicians, mentoring the Sunshine Orchestra, and creating India’s first multicultural virtual band, Secret Mountain, as examples of his commitment to celebrating Indian culture through music.

Addressing the controversy, Rahman acknowledged that work in the Hindi film industry had slowed in recent years, attributing it to shifting power dynamics and indirect signals, which he described as “Chinese whispers.” However, he reiterated that his focus remains on producing music that “honours the past, celebrates the present, and inspires the future.”

Several industry figures, including Shobhaa De, Shaan, and Javed Akhtar, responded to Rahman’s remarks, rejecting any notion of communal bias in Bollywood. Shobhaa De noted that talent has always been the deciding factor, while Shaan and Javed Akhtar emphasised that the industry respects artists of all backgrounds and that Rahman’s standing remains undisputed.

Rahman’s video concluded with a note of gratitude towards India, reaffirming his dedication to music as a unifying and inspiring force. The composer urged fans and colleagues to focus on creative excellence rather than controversies, highlighting that his journey continues to celebrate India’s diverse musical landscape.
