Anees Bazmee Recalls Reshooting Laadla After Divya Bharti's Death at 19

Filmmaker Anees Bazmee has reflected on one of the most emotional chapters of his career, recalling the difficult process of rewriting and reshooting the 1994 film Laadla following the untimely death of actor Divya Bharti. Speaking in a recent interview, Bazmee shared memories of the tragic period, revealing how the production team had to restart a nearly completed film after Bharti's sudden death at the age of 19. He also recounted the actor's final shot, which has remained etched in his memory over the years.

Originally, Laadla was being filmed with Divya Bharti in the lead role alongside Anil Kapoor. However, after the actor's death on April 5, 1993, the makers faced the difficult decision of either shelving the project or beginning production again with a new lead actor. The team eventually chose to reshoot the film, and veteran actor Sridevi stepped into the role that Bharti had originally portrayed, giving the project a new lease of life.

Bazmee recalled that Sridevi had earlier declined the story when it was offered in Tamil and Telugu. However, after Divya Bharti's death, she agreed to join the Hindi version of the film, allowing production to resume. According to the filmmaker, the decision required significant rewriting and extensive reshooting, as much of the original footage featuring Bharti could no longer be used. The process was both emotionally and professionally demanding for everyone associated with the project.

Among the memories Bazmee shared was Divya Bharti's final shot before her death, in which her character uttered the words, "Mujhe bachao" ("Save me"). The filmmaker described the moment as deeply haunting in hindsight, saying the dialogue has remained with him ever since. Although it was simply part of the screenplay, the scene acquired a profound emotional significance following the actor's sudden passing, making it one of the most unforgettable moments of the production.

Released in 1994, Laadla went on to become one of the year's biggest commercial successes. Starring Sridevi, Anil Kapoor and Raveena Tandon, the film received widespread appreciation, particularly for Sridevi's performance. Despite its success, the project continues to be remembered for the tragic circumstances surrounding its production and the loss of one of Hindi cinema's brightest young stars.
