Sholay icon dies weeks before turning 90.
Veteran actor Dharmendra, revered as the original “He-Man” of Indian Cinema and one of its most charismatic superstars, passed away on Monday at the age of 89, plunging the film industry and millions of fans into mourning. The Padma Bhushan awardee had been discharged from Breach Candy Hospital on November 12 after treatment for severe breathing difficulties, but his condition worsened in recent days.
Actress Sharmila Tagore, who shared memorable on-screen chemistry with him in films such as Chupke Chupke, Deewaar, and Naseeb, spoke with deep emotion about their bond. She revealed she was in almost daily contact with the family and expressed profound sadness, saying she desperately wished he would recover. Tagore fondly recalled his warmth, describing him as the industry’s “Papaji” who cared for everyone and maintained impeccable professionalism throughout his career.
Mumbai’s Pawan Hans crematorium witnessed an overwhelming gathering of Bollywood’s biggest names paying their final tributes. Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh, Sanjay Dutt, Anil Kapoor, and Abhishek Bachchan were among those present, with heavy police deployment managing large crowds of grieving fans outside the Deol residence and the venue.
Born Dharam Singh Deol in 1935 in Punjab, Dharmendra entered cinema after winning a Filmfare talent hunt in 1958 and soon became a Pan-India phenomenon. From intense action roles in Sholay and Dharam Veer to unforgettable comedy in Chupke Chupke and romance in countless classics, he delivered over 300 films across six decades, earning adoration across generations.
His passing marks another irreplaceable loss for Indian cinema in recent times. Dharmendra was last seen in Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya (2024) and had completed shooting for the upcoming war drama Ikkis alongside Agastya Nanda, scheduled for release on December 25. As the final journey of one of Bollywood’s last living legends begins, his timeless performances will continue to live on.
