A New Dawn for Peaky Blinders: The Next Generation Rises on Screen

BBC and Netflix unveil two fresh series set in post-war Birmingham with Shelby heirs.

The acclaimed British crime saga “Peaky Blinders” is expanding with two new series introducing a fresh generation of the Shelby family, creator Steven Knight announced Thursday. Produced by Kudos and Garrison Drama, the projects will be filmed at Digbeth Loc Studios in Birmingham, the industrial heartland that birthed the original tale of gangland ambition. Premiering on BBC One with global streaming on Netflix, the shows promise to extend the franchise's gritty legacy, blending post-war turmoil with the family's unyielding drive for power.

Set against the backdrop of 1950s Britain, the narrative unfolds in 1953 as Birmingham emerges from the rubble of World War II and the Blitz, forging a new era from “concrete and steel”. The Shelby clan, once small-time bookies turned empire-builders, now navigates a ruthless battle for dominance over the city's sprawling reconstruction boom. Knight, who penned all six seasons of the original, described the revival as a “new chapter” rooted in Birmingham's resilient spirit. “The new generation of Shelbys has taken the wheel, and it will be a hell of a ride,” he said in a BBC statement, teasing high-stakes drama amid the era's economic revival and lingering scars of conflict.

Each series will deliver six one-hour episodes, capturing the show's signature fusion of historical grit and contemporary flair—think razor-capped enforcers, opium dens, and orchestral Nick Cave soundtracks. BBC Director of Drama Lindsay Salt hailed it as a “game-changing” continuation of one of the network's flagship hits. “Steven has worked his magic once again, and I can’t wait for his scripts to be brought to life when filming begins in Birmingham,” she added. The announcement builds on the franchise's momentum, following a 2022 finale that amassed over 10 million viewers per episode in the UK alone and spawned international fervour.

Since its 2013 debut, “Peaky Blinders” has chronicled the Shelby gang's ascent from post-World War I street hustlers to political kingpins, propelled by Cillian Murphy's magnetic portrayal of patriarch Tommy Shelby. The series, inspired by real-life Peaky Blinders gangs of 19th-century Birmingham, evolved into a cultural juggernaut, influencing fashion, music, and even tourism in the Midlands.

A separate feature film, with Murphy returning as Shelby, remains in development under Garrison Drama. Executive producers include Murphy, Knight, Kudos' Karen Wilson and Martin Haines, Garrison's Jamie Glazebrook, BBC's Jo McClellan and Danielle Scott Haughton, and Netflix's Mona Qureshi and Toby Bentley. Fans eagerly await casting reveals for the younger Shelbys, signalling a torch-passing that could redefine the dynasty for a new era.
