‘3 Idiots’ Actor Omi Vaidya Supports Sonam Wangchuk Amid Ongoing Strike

Omi Vaidya backs Wangchuk’s strike with emotional appeal.

Actor Omi Vaidya, known for playing the character Chatur “Silencer” Ramalingam in the film “3 Idiots”, has appealed to people to pay attention to the health condition of educationist and activist Sonam Wangchuk, who is on an indefinite hunger strike at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. Vaidya expressed concern over Wangchuk’s deteriorating health and urged people to understand the issues behind his protest.

In a video shared on his social media account, Vaidya asked people to take a moment from their daily routines and look into Wangchuk’s situation. He said he did not want Wangchuk to lose his life during the protest and encouraged people to learn about the reasons behind the hunger strike, regardless of whether they agreed with his demands.

Wangchuk, who inspired Aamir Khan’s character of Phunsukh Wangdu in the 2009 film “3 Idiots”, began his indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar on June 28. The protest was organised alongside the Cockroach Janata Party’s demonstration, with demands including action over alleged irregularities related to the NEET examination and the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

Vaidya described Wangchuk as a humble and inspiring individual and reminded viewers about his connection with the popular film character. He said Wangchuk’s work and ideas had influenced many people and urged the public to research the issues surrounding the protest before forming opinions.

The actor said Wangchuk’s health had become a matter of concern after several weeks of fasting. Reports stated that Wangchuk had lost 8.2 kilograms since beginning the hunger strike, with his latest medical checks showing a blood pressure reading of 107/70 mmHg and blood glucose levels at 67 mg/dL.

Vaidya said that people may have different views about Wangchuk’s demands, but the focus should remain on his health and well-being. He appealed for greater public awareness about the issues being raised during the protest and urged people not to ignore the situation.
