Triumph Confirms 350cc Bikes Launch In India This April For Competitive Edge

Triumph to launch 350cc bikes in India by April 2026, downsizing from 400cc to qualify for lower 18% GST and enable competitive pricing.

Triumph Motorcycles, in partnership with Bajaj Auto, is set to launch a new range of 350cc motorcycles in India by April 2026, as confirmed by Bajaj Auto Managing Director Rajiv Bajaj in a recent interview. The models are expected to include downsized versions of popular existing bikes such as the Speed 400, Scrambler 400 X, Speed T4, and potentially the Thruxton 400. These India-specific variants will feature a modified engine derived from the current 398cc single-cylinder unit, achieved by reducing the bore while retaining the stroke, resulting in a displacement just under 350cc. This strategic shift aims to reposition Triumph's entry-level lineup more competitively in the premium mid-capacity segment.

The primary reason for downsizing to 350cc is to navigate India's revised GST structure under GST 2.0, which imposes a higher 40% tax slab on motorcycles exceeding 350cc, compared to 18% for those below it. The current 400cc range, including the Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X, falls into the higher tax bracket, leading to increased pricing pressures since January 2026. By crossing under the 350cc threshold, Triumph can offer more attractive ex-showroom prices, potentially offsetting recent hikes and making the bikes more accessible to buyers in a price-sensitive market. The 400cc models will continue production for export markets, where the tax implications differ.

The new 350cc engine is anticipated to deliver slightly lower power and torque—likely a 7-10% reduction from the current figures of around 39.5 bhp and 37.5 Nm—while emphasizing a more usable low- and mid-range torque curve for everyday riding. This adjustment aligns with Triumph's focus on characterful performance suited to Indian roads, including urban commuting and light touring. The bikes will retain core design elements, premium build quality, and features like LED lighting, digital instrumentation, and ABS, maintaining the brand's appeal in the retro-modern category.

Triumph's move targets strong competition in the sub-500cc premium space, particularly against established players like Royal Enfield in the 350-500cc segment. With the brand's 400cc models selling around 3,500-4,000 units monthly in India, the 350cc variants could help sustain and potentially grow volumes by appealing to cost-conscious enthusiasts seeking Triumph's heritage styling and refinement at a lower ownership cost. Analysts expect the launch to begin with roadster models like the Speed 350, followed by scramblers and others.

This development reflects broader industry adaptations to tax policies, where manufacturers prioritize localization and pricing agility to capture market share. While exact pricing, specifications, and variant details await official confirmation closer to the April launch, the initiative underscores Triumph's commitment to the Indian market through Bajaj's manufacturing expertise. As the date approaches, enthusiasts anticipate further announcements on features, colors, and availability.
