Resurrected 2026 Mitsubishi Pajero Ready To Disrupt India's Premium SUV Segment
New Pajero challenges Fortuner in India.
Mitsubishi Motors has revived the Pajero nameplate after a five-year hiatus from the global market, unveiling the all-new, fifth-generation cross-country SUV at its world premiere in Tokyo on September 2. For markets like India, however, the Pajero name has been absent for far longer, nearly eight years, following Mitsubishi's exit from the Indian passenger vehicle market around 2020. Despite the lack of any confirmed India launch, the SUV's global debut became one of the most trending automotive topics in the country, with related searches on Google reportedly jumping by more than 5,000 percent as enthusiasts sought details on potential pricing and availability.
According to Mitsubishi's official announcement, the new Pajero will initially go on sale in Thailand, followed by Japan and Australia, with deliveries beginning by the end of fiscal year 2026. From fiscal year 2027 onward, the company plans to expand the model's availability to approximately 100 countries across the ASEAN region, Latin America and the Middle East, using its production base in Thailand as the primary export hub. India, notably, has not been included in this initial international rollout plan, and industry observers suggest a return to the Indian market looks unlikely given the scale of investment required to rebuild Mitsubishi's passenger vehicle business in the country after its earlier exit.
Despite the absence of confirmed India plans, the new Pajero's specifications suggest it could have been a strong fit for Indian buyers, particularly those seeking a genuine off-road capable SUV in a market increasingly dominated by crossover-style vehicles. The new model is powered by a 2.4-litre diesel engine producing 204 PS of power and 480 Nm of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and a four-wheel-drive system featuring a low-range transfer case for serious off-road use. The SUV also offers 230 mm of ground clearance along with steep approach, breakover and departure angles of 30.4, 22.6 and 25.8 degrees respectively, underscoring its focus on genuine off-road capability rather than purely on-road comfort or styling.

Built on the robust ladder-frame chassis shared with Mitsubishi's Triton pickup truck, the new Pajero retains the brand's signature upright proportions and squared-off silhouette, featuring a tall bonnet, vertical front end, pronounced wheel arches and a strong shoulder line, deliberately avoiding the more rounded, crossover-like design language adopted by many rivals in recent years. The SUV also comes configured as a seven-seater, offering three rows of seating, positioning it as a practical option for larger families in addition to its off-road-oriented engineering.
The Pajero nameplate carries considerable historical weight in India, having effectively kickstarted the country's premium SUV segment during its original run and cultivated a loyal enthusiast following that has persisted well beyond the model's discontinuation locally. Globally, the Pajero has generated cumulative sales exceeding 3.25 million units across more than 170 countries since its original 1982 debut, and the nameplate also boasts a storied competitive history, having claimed 12 victories, including seven consecutive wins, at the Dakar Rally, one of the world's most demanding off-road endurance events.
Should Mitsubishi eventually reconsider an India launch, the new Pajero would enter a market segment already featuring well-established rivals such as the Toyota Fortuner and the MG Majestor, both of which have captured significant share among buyers seeking body-on-frame SUVs with strong off-road credentials. For now, though, Indian enthusiasts will likely have to continue admiring the new Pajero from a distance, with the model's substantial size, robust hardware and genuine off-road pedigree serving as a reminder of what once made the nameplate a favorite among serious SUV buyers in the country.
