Mercedes-Benz India Issues E20 Advisory Following Sourav Joshi’s Fuel Concerns
Mercedes-Benz responds to E20 fuel concerns after viral claim.
Mercedes-Benz India has reiterated its advisory on the use of E20 petrol after a viral claim by popular YouTuber Sourav Joshi sparked a debate over ethanol-blended fuel and its impact on vehicle mileage. The luxury carmaker said that E20 petrol should only be used in vehicles that are specifically designed or certified to operate with the fuel blend.
The discussion gained attention after Joshi claimed in a recent vlog that his car’s fuel efficiency had dropped significantly after the transition to E20 petrol. His comments led to widespread conversations on social media, with vehicle owners raising questions about the effect of ethanol-blended fuel on mileage, engine performance, and long-term vehicle reliability.
Responding to the growing discussion, Mercedes-Benz India advised customers to follow the fuel recommendations mentioned in their vehicle owner’s manuals. The company said using the correct fuel grade approved for a particular model is important to maintain performance and avoid possible issues related to fuel compatibility.

The clarification comes as India continues the phased implementation of E20 petrol, a fuel blend containing 20 per cent ethanol and 80 per cent petrol. The government’s ethanol-blending programme aims to reduce dependence on imported crude oil, lower emissions, and promote the use of renewable fuel sources.
Automobile manufacturers have maintained that compatibility with E20 fuel depends on the vehicle model and manufacturing specifications. While many newer vehicles are being developed to support higher ethanol blends, some older vehicles may not have been designed for increased ethanol content. Experts have also pointed out that mileage can be affected by several factors, including driving habits, maintenance, road conditions, fuel quality, and vehicle condition.
Mercedes-Benz India’s statement did not directly comment on Sourav Joshi’s mileage claims but repeated its existing guidance regarding fuel usage. The controversy has highlighted the need for greater consumer awareness as India moves towards wider adoption of ethanol-blended fuels and vehicle owners seek clarity about its impact on performance and maintenance.
