Mercedes‑AMG PETRONAS has officially unveiled its W17 Formula 1 car, the team’s challenger for the upcoming 2026 F1 season. The launch marks the start of a new era as the sport adapts to sweeping technical regulations, with teams redesigning their cars to meet updated rules on aerodynamics, power units, and chassis structure.
The W17 is a comprehensive redesign compared with its predecessor, reflecting the major changes introduced in 2026. Central to the new car is a hybrid power unit engineered by Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains. This updated unit emphasizes electric energy output while eliminating the MGU‑H component, in line with the latest regulations. The design also incorporates sustainable fuel technology developed in collaboration with partner Petronas.
Aerodynamically, the W17 features a smaller, lighter chassis with active aerodynamic elements replacing traditional DRS systems. The suspension has been revised to accommodate narrower tyres, while the overall bodywork has been optimized for improved airflow and reduced drag.
