Kia Sorento 7-Seater Hybrid SUV Spotted Testing in India Ahead of 2026 Launch

Kia tests Sorento-based 7-seater hybrid SUV in India, expected launch 2026.

Kia has been spotted testing its upcoming Sorento-based 7-seater SUV in India for the first time, signaling a likely launch in 2026. Codenamed MQ4i, this hybrid SUV aims to compete directly with popular models such as the Mahindra XUV700 and Tata Safari. The test mule seen in a parking facility showcased distinct features like 19-inch alloy wheels and a boxy, three-row silhouette typical of the Sorento’s global design.

Inside the SUV, a rotary gear selector and buttons for electronic parking brake were visible, hinting at a hybrid powertrain. The vehicle retains the latest Kia design language with T-shaped daytime running lights and connected tail lamps. For the Indian market, the Sorento is expected to offer premium features such as dual 12.3-inch displays, panoramic sunroof, privacy glass, powered and ventilated seats, and advanced safety tech like a 360-degree camera and head-up display.

The international Sorento lineup includes three engine options: a 238hp 1.6-litre turbo-petrol hybrid, a 288hp 1.6-litre turbo-petrol plug-in hybrid, and a 2.2-litre diesel hybrid. Petrol variants come with a 6-speed automatic transmission, while the diesel is paired with an 8-speed dual-clutch gearbox. All options are equipped with all-wheel-drive. However, the India-spec MQ4i is expected to debut with a 1.5-litre petrol hybrid engine, which will likely be Kia’s first strong hybrid offering in the country.

The new Sorento’s dimensions are expected to be around 4.8 meters in length with a wheelbase close to 2,800 mm, making it slightly larger than the XUV700. Kia is preparing its Anantapur plant in Andhra Pradesh to serve as the production hub for this model. Industry experts anticipate that the Sorento hybrid will offer a blend of luxury, space, and fuel efficiency to attract family SUV buyers seeking premium features alongside performance.

With the Sorento hybrid SUV’s debut in India, Kia aims to strengthen its foothold in the fiercely competitive mid-size SUV segment and cater to growing demand for hybrid vehicles. The launch is widely expected in 2026, setting the stage for intensified competition among three-row SUVs in India’s booming auto market.
