Chinese Electric Car Sets World Record with 213 kmph Drift

GAC Hyptec SSR becomes the fastest drifting electric vehicle, clocking 213 kmph in a record-breaking stunt.

China’s GAC Hyptec SSR has set a new Guinness World Record for the fastest drift by an electric vehicle, reaching a speed of 213.523 kmph. The feat was achieved by professional driver Jason Ye, also known as Ye Zhicheng, during a controlled test session in Beijing on 29 October 2025. The record surpasses the previous EV drifting milestone of 207.996 kmph, set by Zhao Junfeng in 2022.

A video shared by Guinness World Records has gone viral on Instagram, showing the black electric car sliding sideways at high speed while generating clouds of smoke, demonstrating both precision and control. Ye maintained a drift angle exceeding 30 degrees over a distance of more than 50 meters, meeting all the strict criteria set by Guinness and verified by third-party measurers.

The Hyptec SSR is powered by a tri-motor all-wheel-drive system, combining a 320 kW front permanent magnet synchronous motor with two rear motors at 260 kW and 320 kW, producing over 900 kW, or approximately 1,224 horsepower. The vehicle can accelerate from 0–100 kmph in just 1.9 seconds and sustain up to 1.7 G in acceleration, with a top speed limited to 251 kmph.

While this achievement sets a new benchmark for electric vehicles, the overall fastest drift record remains with internal combustion engine cars. Masato Kawabata holds the current top drifting speed of 304.96 kmph in a Nissan GT-R Nismo, a record set in 2016, highlighting the ongoing competition between ICE and EV performance.

The record-breaking stunt demonstrates the rapid advancements in electric vehicle technology, particularly in handling, power delivery, and stability during extreme maneuvers. GAC Aion confirmed that the run met all Guinness World Records standards and was conducted under strictly controlled conditions to ensure safety.

With EVs increasingly challenging the performance of traditional sports cars, the Hyptec SSR’s record serves as a milestone, showcasing the potential for electric vehicles not just in sustainability but also in high-speed motorsports and precision driving.
