BMW X1 LWB India Launch Date Revealed With Major Luxury SUV Update
BMW X1 LWB launches August 21
BMW has confirmed that the X1 Long Wheelbase (LWB) will be launched in India on August 21, 2026. The stretched version of the luxury SUV will join the existing standard BMW X1 and the electric iX1 LWB in the Indian market, expanding the company’s entry-level premium SUV lineup. The BMW X1 LWB is expected to become the brand’s most affordable long-wheelbase combustion-engine model in India. Originally developed for the Chinese market, the SUV has been designed to offer additional cabin space, especially for rear-seat passengers, while retaining the overall character and driving experience of the standard X1.
The launch will place the X1 LWB in a relatively unique position in India’s luxury SUV segment, as the entry-level premium SUV category currently has limited options with a dedicated long-wheelbase configuration. BMW is expected to target customers looking for increased rear passenger comfort without moving to larger and more expensive luxury SUVs. In terms of dimensions, the BMW X1 LWB measures 4,616 mm in length, 1,845 mm in width and 1,641 mm in height. The SUV has a wheelbase of 2,802 mm, making it 116 mm longer overall and 110 mm longer between the axles compared with the standard X1. It is also 11 mm taller than the regular version.
The additional wheelbase is expected to improve rear-seat legroom, which is a key factor for luxury vehicle buyers in markets such as India. The extended cabin space could make the X1 LWB more appealing to customers who frequently travel with passengers and prioritise comfort over compact dimensions. The design of the BMW X1 LWB remains largely similar to the standard model. It features sleek LED headlamps, LED tail-lamps, BMW’s signature kidney grille and a crossover-inspired profile. The overall styling retains the sporty appearance associated with the X1 while adding practicality through its larger proportions.

The China-spec version of the SUV comes with 19-inch alloy wheels as standard, while 20-inch wheels are available as an option. However, BMW may introduce different wheel options for the Indian market, potentially including 18-inch wheels, similar to those offered on the standard X1 and iX1 LWB. A smaller wheel setup could help improve ride comfort on Indian roads. The BMW X1 LWB is expected to share several features and technologies with the standard X1 range, including premium interiors, advanced connectivity options and driver assistance systems. Details about the India-spec engine options, equipment list and pricing are likely to be announced closer to the launch date.
The introduction of the X1 LWB reflects BMW’s strategy of expanding its product offerings in India by catering to changing customer preferences. Long-wheelbase vehicles have traditionally been popular among luxury buyers in India due to the importance placed on rear-seat comfort. With its extended dimensions and premium positioning, the BMW X1 LWB is expected to strengthen the company’s presence in the growing luxury SUV market. More details about specifications, variants and pricing will be revealed when BMW officially launches the model on August 21.
