BMW Debuts Subtle Logo Redesign with Neue Klasse iX3 Launch

BMW reveals a refined logo on the new iX3, blending tradition with modern minimalism.

At the recent Munich Motor Show, BMW captivated audiences with the world premiere of its all-electric iX3, the first production model of the innovative Neue Klasse platform. While much attention was drawn to the vehicle’s bold grille and headlight design, the Bavarian automaker quietly introduced a refreshed version of its iconic roundel logo, a subtle yet significant update that nearly went unnoticed. The redesigned badge, debuted on the iX3, signals a new chapter in BMW’s visual identity, blending heritage with a contemporary aesthetic.

The updated logo retains the familiar blue-and-white propeller design encased in a black hoop with the “BMW” initials, but closer inspection reveals meticulous refinements. The inner chrome ring, previously separating the black border from the blue-and-white quadrants, has been eliminated, creating a seamless flow. Additionally, the horizontal and vertical chrome bars that once divided the blue and white sections are gone, resulting in a cleaner, more streamlined appearance. The remaining chrome elements, confined to the outer ring and the “BMW” lettering, now feature a smoked, sophisticated look, while the black hoop adopts a satin, matte finish, moving away from the glossy sheen of its predecessor.

BMW’s design team, led by Oliver Heilmer, Head of BMW Design for the Neue Klasse, aimed to preserve the logo’s heritage while enhancing its precision. “We wanted to keep the heritage, but bring more precision to the logo,” Heilmer explained, noting that the refined “BMW” letters incorporate a shiny pattern reminiscent of high-end watches, and the white surfaces sit closer to the outer ring for a flatter, sharper effect. This redesign aligns the physical badge with the two-dimensional, transparent-ring logo used in BMW’s digital and marketing materials since 2020, bridging tradition with modernity.

The iX3’s logo also omits the blue outer rim seen on other electric models like the iX1, further distinguishing its aesthetic. A BMW spokesperson confirmed to Carscoops that this updated roundel will debut on the iX3 and gradually roll out to new and refreshed models across the lineup, marking a unified visual evolution for the brand’s future vehicles, both electric and otherwise. This strategic rollout underscores BMW’s commitment to a cohesive, modern design language as part of the Neue Klasse era.

As the iX3 sets the stage for BMW’s electrified future, the subtle logo redesign has sparked intrigue among enthusiasts and industry observers. The changes, though understated, reflect BMW’s meticulous approach to refining its brand identity, ensuring that even its smallest details evolve with the times. With the iX3’s sleek design and cutting-edge technology, this new logo serves as a fitting emblem for a brand poised to redefine luxury and performance in the electric vehicle landscape.
