Simple Wave First Ride Review: Design, Performance, Storage And Features Explained

Simple Energy has taken a different approach with the new Wave, moving away from the performance-focused character of its earlier scooters to create a more family-oriented electric scooter. The Wave combines a claimed 171 km IDC range with generous storage, a spacious seat and a comfortable riding position. After spending time with the 3.7 kWh variant, it is clear that practicality is now central to Simple Energy's strategy, although some aspects of quality and execution could be improved.

The Wave's design is softer and more approachable than Simple Energy's earlier products, with rounded bodywork, generous proportions and a long seat. The riding position provides adequate space for the rider, while the sturdy rear grab handle should also make it convenient for pillion use. However, the quality of some components does not feel as convincing. Several plastic panels have an average finish, while the switchgear lacks the solid tactile feel expected from a premium electric scooter. The pill storage compartment and charging-port cover also feel somewhat flimsy.

The scooter does better in terms of technology and practicality. Its display is clear, easy to read and remains visible in bright conditions, while the interface is straightforward. Depending on the variant, features include navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, call and music controls, GPS tracking and over-the-air updates. Higher variants add equipment such as traction control, regenerative braking, hill-hold assist and reverse mode. Storage is another major strength, with up to 70 litres of capacity, including 63 litres under the seat, a 3-litre glovebox and a 4-litre Pill compartment. The 920 mm-long seat and spacious riding area further reinforce its family-focused character.

The 3.7 kWh variant offers smooth and predictable performance that should be adequate for everyday urban commuting. Throttle response is brisk enough to make the Wave feel lively without becoming difficult to manage, and there is sufficient performance for occasional short highway stretches. The suspension setup is equally well suited to everyday use, absorbing potholes and speed breakers while maintaining reasonable body control. The long, well-padded seat also provides good support for both rider and pillion, making comfort one of the scooter's strongest attributes.

However, the test ride also revealed a safety-related concern that cannot be overlooked. During brake testing, the initial braking performance felt reassuring at different speeds, but an unusual noise subsequently emerged from the front end. Inspection revealed that one nut securing the front disc-brake caliper had come loose and fallen off, while the other could be unscrewed by hand. This could be an isolated issue with the particular test scooter, and a single incident is not enough to establish a wider problem. Nevertheless, because it involves the braking system, Simple Energy should investigate the matter immediately and determine whether additional assembly and quality-control checks are necessary.

Overall, the Simple Wave represents a significant shift in Simple Energy's product strategy, placing practicality, comfort and everyday usability alongside performance. The 3.7 kWh version is well suited to city riding, while its suspension, seating and storage make it a strong proposition for family buyers. Prices start at Rs 1,09,999 (ex-showroom Bengaluru) for the 2.2 kWh Wave S, while the range-topping Wave+ with a 5 kWh battery and TFT display costs Rs 1,89,999 (ex-showroom Bengaluru). As Simple Energy targets a competitive mass-market segment, consistent build quality and safety will be crucial to turning the Wave's practical strengths into mainstream appeal.
