JSW Motors Spotted Testing Chery Jaecoo J5-Based SUV in India Near Pune
A camouflaged Jaecoo J5 prototype was spotted near Pune as JSW Motors expands its India plans.
JSW Motors is reportedly expanding its upcoming automotive portfolio in India, with spy images revealing a new SUV based on the Chery Jaecoo J5 platform undergoing tests near Pune. The move comes as part of the company’s broader strategy to compete in the rapidly growing electric and hybrid SUV segment in India. Automotive analysts say the new model could rival vehicles like the Hyundai Creta Electric.
The Indian conglomerate has already announced plans for a plug-in hybrid SUV derived from Chery’s Jetour T2 and a fully electric SUV based on the iCar V23. The testing of the Jaecoo J5-based SUV indicates JSW Motors’ intention to offer multiple options across electrified and hybrid segments, catering to both urban and semi-urban buyers seeking sustainable mobility solutions.
Photographs of the prototype show heavy camouflage, suggesting the vehicle is still in early development stages. While exact specifications remain unconfirmed, the model is expected to feature modern connectivity options, safety technologies, and a design suited to Indian road conditions. Industry insiders speculate that it could offer both hybrid and fully electric variants to widen its appeal.

JSW Motors’ expansion into electric mobility follows its earlier successful collaboration with SAIC’s MG Motor, which helped the company gain insights into manufacturing and technology for the Indian market. The introduction of multiple models under the JSW Motors brand demonstrates its commitment to establishing a presence in the competitive EV and hybrid segment.
The planned SUV launches are expected to intensify competition among compact and mid-size SUVs in India, especially as consumers increasingly shift toward environmentally friendly vehicles. Analysts note that brands offering a mix of hybrid and electric options are better positioned to capture market share in India’s evolving automotive landscape.
With the Jaecoo J5-based SUV entering test phases, JSW Motors is signalling a more aggressive rollout timeline. Market watchers anticipate official announcements regarding launch dates, pricing, and technical specifications later this year, potentially marking JSW Motors as a significant new player in India’s EV and hybrid SUV space
