India's preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup have encountered an unexpected challenge, with Virat Kohli reportedly ruled out of the upcoming ODI series against Afghanistan and uncertainty surrounding Rohit Sharma's availability. The development could force the team management and selectors to accelerate contingency planning as they continue shaping India's squad for the next global tournament.
Kohli and Rohit were expected to resume their World Cup preparations during Afghanistan's tour of India, which includes a three-match ODI series beginning on June 13. Both veterans returned to international cricket towards the end of 2025 after a break and responded to questions about their future by delivering strong performances. However, despite their contributions, neither the selectors nor head coach Gautam Gambhir had publicly committed to including them in India's long-term plans for the 2027 World Cup.
The experienced duo made a compelling case through a series of ODI assignments against Australia, South Africa and New Zealand. Kohli emerged as India's leading run-scorer during that period, amassing 616 runs in nine innings, including three centuries and three half-centuries, while also earning a Player of the Series award. Rohit also impressed, scoring 409 runs with a century and three fifties, and claimed a Player of the Series honour of his own.

Seeking to further strengthen their credentials, both players returned to domestic cricket and featured in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. However, with international attention shifting towards the T20 World Cup and the IPL, opportunities in the 50-over format remained limited in recent months.
The upcoming Afghanistan series was expected to offer another important platform for Kohli and Rohit to continue building momentum ahead of the World Cup cycle. If Kohli's absence and Rohit's uncertainty persist, the Indian team management may be compelled to test alternative combinations and identify potential successors.
