Naman Dhir shines as India complete a record-breaking T20I chase.

India defeated New Zealand by four wickets in the first T20I at Christchurch on Thursday, completing a record-breaking run chase to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. Chasing a target of 226, India reached 230 for six in 19.4 overs, registering their highest successful run chase in men’s T20I history. The victory came through a collective batting effort, with Sanju Samson leading the charge at the top and crucial contributions from the middle order helping India cross the finish line.
Samson anchored the innings with an aggressive 67 off 33 balls, striking eight fours and four sixes. His innings gave India momentum during the chase and kept the required run rate under control. The opener combined attacking strokes with timely boundaries to ensure India remained in contention against a challenging target set by the hosts.
Shreyas Iyer contributed 42 runs, providing stability after Samson’s dismissal, while Axar Patel added 24 to keep the chase moving. Naman Dhir remained unbeaten on 42, playing an important role in the closing stages. Finn Allen also made a valuable contribution, scoring 45 as New Zealand maintained a strong scoring rate. The home side appeared well placed after producing a total of 225, but India's batters responded with consistent aggression and partnerships at crucial moments. The visitors managed to withstand the pressure despite losing six wickets during the chase.

Samson’s commanding innings and the finishing contributions from Iyer, Axar and Dhir proved decisive in a high-scoring contest. India’s successful pursuit of 226 also marked a significant achievement in the team’s T20I record, underlining the batting depth that helped them overcome New Zealand’s imposing total.
