Affordable Accident Protection: How PM Suraksha Bima Yojana Supports Families After Tragedy

Explore the scheme's premium, coverage, eligibility and accidental insurance benefits.

The Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY), a government-backed accident insurance scheme, offers eligible individuals accident-related insurance coverage for an annual premium of just ₹20. The scheme is designed to provide financial protection to people from different income groups, particularly those who may not have access to expensive private insurance policies. Introduced in 2015, PMSBY forms part of the Centre's broader financial inclusion initiative aimed at extending affordable social security to citizens across the country.

Under the scheme, subscribers are eligible for an insurance benefit of ₹2 lakh in the event of accidental death or specified permanent total disability. A benefit of ₹1 lakh is provided for specified permanent partial disabilities, including the total and irreversible loss of sight in one eye or the loss of use of one hand or foot. For permanent total disability, the coverage includes the irreversible loss of both eyes, both hands or both feet, or the combination of loss of sight in one eye and loss of use of a hand or foot.

Individuals between 18 and 70 years of age who hold an eligible individual savings bank or post office account can enrol in the scheme. Joint account holders can also subscribe individually, provided they meet the eligibility requirements and pay the applicable premium. However, a person holding multiple accounts with different banks or post offices can obtain coverage through only one designated account. The annual premium of ₹20 is collected through an automatic debit facility after the subscriber provides consent.

PMSBY provides coverage for one year, beginning June 1 and continuing until May 31 of the following year. The policy is renewable annually, allowing subscribers to continue their protection by maintaining sufficient funds in their designated accounts. New eligible applicants can also join in subsequent years, with coverage beginning from the date the premium is successfully debited. The scheme is administered through public sector general insurance companies and other approved insurers in partnership with participating banks and post offices.

The insurance policy covers qualifying accidental deaths and disabilities, including certain incidents arising from natural calamities such as floods and earthquakes. However, it does not cover death by suicide or provide reimbursement for hospitalisation expenses following an accident. Temporary injuries and disabilities that do not meet the specified permanent disability conditions are also not eligible for compensation. Subscribers and their families must provide the necessary documentary evidence when submitting an insurance claim.

To enrol, eligible individuals can approach their participating bank or post office and submit the prescribed application and consent forms, authorising the annual premium deduction. Nominees or legal heirs can submit claims in the event of the subscriber's accidental death, while disability benefits are credited directly to the insured person's bank account. With its low annual premium and straightforward enrolment process, PMSBY aims to extend basic accident insurance protection to a wider section of India's population.
