Ranbir Kapoor Issues Apology Over Dussehra Speech At Ramayana Event

The actor acknowledges his verbal mistake during the Chennai event.

Bollywood actor Ranbir Kapoor has apologised for a verbal slip during his speech at a promotional event for his upcoming film Ramayana in Chennai, where he mistakenly referred to Dussehra as a festival associated with the victory of Lord Ram over Ravana without correctly explaining its significance. The actor acknowledged his mistake and clarified that it was an unintended error while addressing the audience. The incident occurred during an event organised to promote the film, in which Ranbir plays Lord Ram. His apology came after the remark attracted attention on social media.

During the event, Ranbir spoke about the cultural and spiritual significance of Ramayana, one of India's most revered epics. The actor expressed his enthusiasm for being part of a cinematic adaptation of the ancient story and discussed the responsibility of portraying a figure worshipped by millions. However, a slip in his wording while referring to Dussehra drew attention away from the film's promotion. Ranbir subsequently described the mistake as a slip of the tongue and apologised for the confusion caused by his remarks.

The actor's portrayal of Lord Ram has generated considerable interest since the project was announced. The film is being directed by Nitesh Tiwari and is envisioned as a large-scale adaptation of the Hindu epic, which recounts Lord Ram's journey, his exile, the abduction of Sita by Ravana and the eventual battle to rescue her. Given the religious and cultural importance of the story, the casting and public appearances associated with the project have attracted considerable scrutiny from audiences.

The Ramayana adaptation features a prominent cast, with Sai Pallavi portraying Sita and Yash playing Ravana. Sunny Deol is also associated with the project as Hanuman, while other actors are expected to portray important figures from the epic. The production has attracted attention for its scale, visual ambitions and plans to bring the story to audiences in India and overseas. The filmmakers have sought to present the narrative for contemporary viewers while retaining the central themes of duty, righteousness, sacrifice and the triumph of good over evil.

Ranbir's apology highlights the sensitivity surrounding public discussions of religious figures and traditional festivals, particularly when actors are promoting projects based on sacred narratives. Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashami, is widely celebrated as the victory of good over evil and is associated in many parts of India with Lord Ram's defeat of Ravana. The festival also carries different regional traditions and religious meanings. Ranbir's clarification sought to address the verbal error as attention continues to build around the film, which is among the most anticipated adaptations of the epic in Indian cinema.
