BCCI, Selectors to Meet on Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s Roadmap Toward 2027 World Cup

BCCI to meet selectors and management to decide Rohit and Kohli’s roles ahead of 2027 World Cup.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is preparing to convene a pivotal meeting involving top officials, head coach Gautam Gambhir, and chief selector Ajit Agarkar to chart the future of senior batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the ODI format, with a clear focus on their potential roles leading into the 2027 ODI World Cup. The discussions are slated to occur in Ahmedabad following the conclusion of the upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa, which begins on December 1 in Visakhapatnam. Sources indicate that no formal conversations have yet taken place with the duo, who have retired from T20Is and Tests but remain committed to white-ball cricket, emphasizing the need for clarity to avoid uncertainty clouding their performances.

The urgency stems from concerns over the veterans' match readiness, as both players operate in a single format with lengthy breaks between series, often returning rusty after extended absences. In the recent ODI tour of Australia in October, Rohit emerged as the highest run-scorer with 202 runs, including a century and a half-century, earning Player of the Series honors, while Kohli contributed a gritty 74 in the third match after twin ducks in the first two. However, insiders noted that the series was already lost, and the bowlers had set up the final game, highlighting the risk of slow starts in high-stakes encounters. "One can't afford that in every series," a BCCI source remarked, underscoring the board's directive for Rohit to prioritize fitness and performance while ignoring retirement speculation.

At 38 and 37, respectively, Rohit and Kohli will be pushing 40 by the 2027 World Cup in South Africa—India's last major 50-over ICC event since their 2011 triumph—and the BCCI views this meeting as essential for "honest conversations" on their longevity, fitness benchmarks, and leadership contributions. The management expects Rohit to sustain his aggressive top-order approach, as exemplified in the 2023 Champions Trophy, to ease pressure on emerging talents like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill. Kohli, meanwhile, is anticipated to anchor the middle order with consistency, drawing from his proven track record of 14,181 ODI runs at an average of 58.07.

To address the limited game time—India's ODI calendar features just 27 matches until the end of 2026, interspersed with Tests and T20Is—the duo has been strongly advised to participate in the Vijay Hazare Trophy next month, India's premier domestic 50-over tournament. This move aims to build match sharpness on varied Indian pitches, mirroring past recommendations for sporadic players. Post-South Africa, India faces New Zealand in a home ODI series in January 2026, followed by a tour of England in July, providing immediate testing grounds before a potential lull.

The BCCI's approach balances respect for the duo's stature—Rohit as the last World Cup-winning captain and Kohli as a run-machine—with pragmatic planning for succession. While no forced retirements are on the table, the board seeks to integrate backups like Ruturaj Gaikwad or Tilak Varma, ensuring a seamless transition without compromising on experience. Earlier in 2025, similar talks were floated but deferred amid T20 World Cup preparations, yet the recent Test whitewash against South Africa has amplified calls for strategic clarity across formats.

As India eyes redemption in the ongoing ODI leg against South Africa—starting with a series where Rohit leads and Kohli bats at No. 3—this meeting could define the twilight of two modern greats' ODI careers. With over 25,000 combined runs and 83 centuries between them, their decision to extend until 2027 could provide the stability needed for another title push, but only if backed by rigorous preparation and board support. The outcome, insiders say, will prioritize merit over sentiment, ensuring the team remains competitive in a post-Kohli-Sharma era.
