Tensions within Karnataka’s Congress government flared at a public event in Mysuru district on Saturday, when Chief Minister Siddaramaiah sharply rebuked a party leader for suggesting he mention Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar in his speech.
The incident, captured on video and now circulating widely on social media, underscored the simmering unease over the Chief Minister’s post.
The event, Sadhana Samavesha, was organized to showcase the Congress government’s achievements and announce new projects. Shivakumar, a prominent figure in the state government, attended and addressed the gathering but left early for Bengaluru, citing an emergency.

When Siddaramaiah took the stage, he omitted Shivakumar’s name while acknowledging dignitaries. A Congress leader’s prompt to include the Deputy Chief Minister drew a sharp response. “DK Shivakumar is not here, right? Please go sit down. What kind of lawyer are you?” Siddaramaiah retorted. He added, “You mention those on the dais, not those who’ve left. That’s protocol. Advocates should know this.”
The episode fuels speculation about a power struggle within the Karnataka Congress, with the opposition BJP claiming Shivakumar could replace Siddaramaiah.
Despite the Congress high command dismissing any leadership change and Shivakumar publicly supporting Siddaramaiah, public interactions between the two have often hinted at underlying friction.
The viral video has sparked debates about party unity, with the BJP seizing the opportunity to highlight Congress’s internal discord. As Karnataka navigates its political landscape, such public displays of tension could impact the party’s image ahead of future challenges.
While Siddaramaiah remains firm in his position, the incident underscores the delicate balance of power within the state’s ruling coalition.
