West Bengal Issues Order For Holding Centres in Every District to House Detainees
The West Bengal government orders holding centers across all districts to detain suspected illegal immigrants and Rohingyas.
The West Bengal government has issued an order to establish “holding centers" in every district across the state to house individuals detained on suspicion of being illegal immigrants from Bangladesh or Rohingya communities. According to the order, the centers will be used to keep suspects temporarily while authorities carry out identification and deportation procedures.
Officials said individuals detained under suspicion of illegal infiltration can be held at these centers for up to 30 days. The state government also clarified that the facilities may not be limited to newly detained individuals but could also accommodate foreign nationals previously arrested and released from prisons while their deportation process remains pending.
In its directive, the government stated that the repatriation process for individuals allegedly residing illegally in the state is being initiated. “Holding centers will be established across the districts for this purpose,” the order said. Authorities have been instructed to take the necessary administrative and logistical steps to operationalize the facilities at the district level.

The move comes amid increased focus on illegal immigration and border security in eastern India. The Centre had earlier issued directives to states to identify and repatriate infiltrators, particularly undocumented Bangladeshi nationals and Rohingya immigrants. The issue has remained politically sensitive in West Bengal because of its long international border with Bangladesh.
The report also mentioned that Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari recently held a press conference at Nabanna, where he claimed that the previous administration had failed to properly implement the Centre’s directives regarding infiltration and deportation. The development is expected to intensify political debate in the state, with immigration and border management continuing to remain key issues ahead of future elections.
