Heatwave Health Alert: Rising Temperatures Directly Impact Mental Well-Being And Anxiety Levels

Heatwaves trigger anxiety, irritability, and emotional distress in people.

Doctors and health experts are highlighting the growing connection between extreme heatwaves and declining mental well-being, warning that prolonged exposure to high temperatures can contribute to increased anxiety, irritability, emotional stress, and mental exhaustion. Medical professionals say that while heatwaves are commonly associated with dehydration and heatstroke, their impact on psychological health often goes unnoticed.

According to experts, people frequently experience symptoms such as impatience, restlessness, frustration, low mood, and difficulty concentrating during periods of extreme heat. These emotional reactions can affect even otherwise healthy individuals, particularly when temperatures remain high for several consecutive days and disrupt normal daily routines.

Speaking on the issue, Parinita Kaur, Director and Unit Head of Internal Medicine at Max Super Speciality Hospital in Dwarka, explained that the human body works continuously to regulate temperature during heatwaves. Excessive sweating, dehydration, disturbed sleep, and constant physical discomfort can gradually place additional stress on the mind and emotional balance.

Health experts noted that poor sleep quality during hot nights can further worsen anxiety and irritability. Continuous fatigue and exhaustion may also reduce patience levels and increase emotional sensitivity, making it harder for individuals to manage stress or maintain productivity. People who already struggle with anxiety disorders, depression, or other mental health conditions may experience stronger emotional reactions during periods of intense heat.

Medical professionals have advised people to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, maintain proper indoor ventilation, and prioritise adequate rest during heatwave conditions. Experts also recommend limiting physically demanding activities during peak afternoon hours and seeking medical help if symptoms such as severe anxiety, confusion, dizziness, or panic-like feelings become frequent or intense.
